Documented since the X century, the Arouca Monastery, exclusively female since 1154, will be affirmed specially from the XIII century, after it has joined D.Mafalda, daughter of Sancho I, here buried. From the setback phases remain meager traces, due to the major refurbishment of the XVII – XVIII centuries, which defined the current appearance. The church was built between 1704/1730 with traces of Carlo Gimac. The most notable spaces of the whole set are the Church, the Choir of the Nuns, the Cloisters, the Dining Room and the Kitchen. Deserves special mention the magnificent Museum of Sacred Art, where it has – one of the best of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula – , in which, in addition to multiple objects of worship, vestments, pieces of furniture, liturgical manuscripts, it can be found rare pieces in the arts of sculpture, painting, tapestry and jewellery.
